Welcome to blogging!

Instead of keeping a response journal as we have for the other novels that we have studied this year, we are going to share our thoughts and ideas through use of this blog for Warriors Don't Cry. The responses will still be read and graded by me. Rather than getting one large grade at the end of the novel for your response journal, you will get credit for your responses along the way. I hope that we can use this as a way to dig a little deeper into our study of the novel, as well as the Civil Rights era.

A few rules need to be followed to ensure that you earn credit for your hard work:
  1. When you post, be sure to include your first name and last initial with your response. Also, please include your room number. For example, Brandon B. Room 302
  2. Be sure to spell check your work before you submit your comment.
  3. Meet deadlines for submitting your comments.

i think the picture that really stood out was the picture of elizabeth eckford because a white woman is yelling at her and it looks like she`s not even paying attention to the lady.

The picture that stands out for me would be the picture were they are screaming at them. You know the picture were the white lady looks like a monkey on steroids. Well yeah that picture stands out for me because you really dont see people like mothers and grown up kids screaming at one person just for their skin color. Also because you can see the national gaurd in the background and like when do you see armed men at you school and that is why it stood out for me.

  4. The picture of Elizabeth Eckford walking at the face of the mob really caught my attention because it would be hard for me to be strong when people are yelling and screaming insults or who knows what else they were doing in that picture.

  5. For me, I see a Elizabeth being mistreated by the white people. All the mob is acting like immature racist human beings. The white people should think more wisely and see what the little rock 9 people are going through. Also the mob is being selfish and they feel they have the needs to take over COLORED people.

  6. I think that the picture of Elizabeth Eckford being brave in front of a mob is the one that stood out because there is a white lady yelling at her and she's doing good to ignore it but what stinks is that she's getting yelled at for no reason at all and I feel bad for her because she's making history by being one of the first black people to enter an all white school and none of them realize that there breaking a barrier of racism and the white people just see a black person in a white school and thats wrong to white people. We are all Gods children and so we should all be treated equally and fairly. This is why I chose this picture.

The picture that caught my attention was the one of Elizabeth Eckford walking while being surrounded by all those white people. In the picture you can see that they were yelling at her but she was still very calm and brave.

  8. I think what the picture shows is that she is brave enough to ignore the crazy lady behind her screaming at her.I think elizabeth did the rigth thing at ignoring the white people and just moving along.

  10. One thing that really stand out for me is that the teenagers had to be driven to school by soldiers. I notice how Elizabeth is being mistreated by the white people. The white people didn't just wanted to beat her up but also kill her. And another picture is when elizabeth stands out for herself and faces the mob.

  11. The picture that really stood to was the one where elizabeth and her mother are walking to central high and how eople were really screaming bad stuff to them .I also think that the picture where the men of 101st airborne is interesting because they were white and they didn't do anything to the nine people that were actually submitted to central high . In my opinion i think that everybody should be treated equally . No one should be treated bad because of the color of their skin .

  12. I see that Elizabeth is the only African American. I also see soldiers that see what is hapening to her, and dont do anything. I see Elizabeth dress in white and black. I see a mob following her and a girl shouting at her.

  13. That this quote says that god's warriors don't cry because god is always with god's warriors, like grandma said "God warriors don't cry,'cause they trust that hes always by their side"(Beals 44).

  14. from my view point the quote that we discused yesterday about the mask means that Melba was brave to support the racist things it was like a protection to not talk back or make the deal bigger. The quote "warriors dont cry "(beals 44) means that Melba has to be strong dont give up on her selve ingnore the racist people because their not going to make any good no matter what she goes through.

  15. The quote "god's wariors don't cry " (beals 44 ) means that melba has to be strong and not let anybody see her cry because that would be a sighn of weakness . Also that god is always with her no matter what she goes through. Like the poem we read yesterday she has to put on her mask.Melba's grandmother talks to her about being a quiter and not letting people see her real emotions. That's basicly what the quote means.

  16. The quote "warriors don't cry", means that soldiers are strong and they don't cry if their being discriminated by others. The conversation between grandma and melba shows the way they speak to eachother trying to explain to melba to learn how to be strong and even though she feel sad about the situation she doesn't need to show her real emotions or feelings. "you'll make this your last cry, you're a warrior on the battlefield for your lord, cause they trust that he's always by their side(Beals,pg44).This quote explains grandma talking to Melba

The quote that saids "Gods warriors don't cry"(Beals 44), means that people that don't give up will be succesful. When they are having their conversation Melba's grandma tells her that "you are not a quiter"(Pg.44-45 Beals). This tells me that her grandma cares about her and she knows that she wants to go to the school. Melba and her granda have a good relationship of granda and grandaughter. Her grandma wants her to go to accualy face life and learn how to protect her self from it.

If I was Melba's mom I would not agree with her on going to the a school, because I would know that she would be in danger, but I would also let her do what she thinks is right. If she was in any danger I would ofcourse risk my life and if its a mistake the dicision she makes then she would learn from her mistakes. I would also talk to her about the consequenses there would be and about the good things it would have. Also I would let her take the decision because maybe all she wants is to show some kids that people like her can do it and take advantage of what she knows. I woukld let her take the desicion of going to school because she justs might be following my steps if I was her mom.

  19. well if i was melbas mom i would not agree with her on going to central high because its pretty risky on going there because you could easily get shot or even get killed .i would also keep her in her same school or move to another country because if i was her mother i would want to suffer because they killed my daughter .

My views about the civil rights is that . They are not yet complete because there are some schools that are not equal.Back their rights were not equal to the whites but thyat was because they din't really now them back then. they din't know that they were really nice people who were just being mistreated. All they wanted was equal rights for all."NO matter what im gonna be a regular person"(Melba Patillo Beals 47). This quote is saying that they would do anything to have aregular life like thewhite peopel:go to school ,ride buses ,go to movies.Just have a regular life.

  21. Now,that Dr.Rogers talked more about the civil rights yesterday i thought that they were unfair to blacks and to whites too because the whites like he said didn't gave a chance to know the blacks and know the way they feel they just judge the way they looked and more specifically they judge their color. The other thing that i thought was important of the speech he gave is when one day when he was walking to school he saw a big sign that said no colored people allowed so he felt really bad because since he loved going to school he was just not allowed in school anymore."Niggers stink ,the room smells now"(beals,63).This quote from the book shows how the whited expressed their selves toward the blacks.

  22. The evvents that lead melba to the conclusion that "integrationm is a much bigger word"(beals 113) .Is when at a pep rally she is cornered and some football players attack her by dropping her books to the floor ,and then one of them grabs her by the neck and chocks her then lets her go .Also another event is when she is in the halways and someone hits her drops her to the floor and she recievs two kiks one in the shin and one in her stomach.

From what I have read Melba probobly said that because people still treat her bad. For exsample a boy spit on her face, and some boys keep droping her books on the ground. Melba got kicked in the shin and in her stomach. Danny could not do anything about it because he was told to take care of her but not to fight with the othere kids. Melba said that because she also was choked by a white guy, also they trew a flaming stick at her and Danny screamed so hard she listen and got down.(Beals 107,113). Melba problobly said that because she was scared and tired of going to the school and act nice and not do anyhtring to defend er from all those nasty comments and pushing around.

Well from my view point there is a lot of diffrence between todays dating than back in the 50s. In the 50s the parents were strict but they tought their kids hot to protect themselves and they new that if anything happended the law would forbid it. Back then the boys were a gentlemen and they would bring floweres and stuff they would care about their feelings. Back then the women would say that they would wait until they are married, today ofcourse the teens are having babies at the age of 14. People now are more extreme and crazy they think that everything is going to be undercontrolled when all they are doing is manipulating. Today the dating parts are so dangerous to because if you date a boy thats in a gang then all he is doing is putting you in danger.
