Dr. Roberts Visit
Take a minute to reflect on Dr. Roberts visit yesterday. What are your thoughts about Civil Rights after having heard him speak? Make a few connections with Warriors Don't Cry. Use one direct quote or paraphrase from Warriors with the proper citation. BE DETAILED! I have high expectations for your responses.

Dr. Roberts visit yesterday made me reflect all about Warriors Don't Cry. For instance, the book stated, "Now you've had your lesson. You don't have to go back to that awful school anymore". This is a turning point fron the thoughts of the children becuase they would've picked not to attend Central High anymore. Or decide to keep going back to Central High. With the fear or being harmed or even killed. As Dr. Roberts had stated yesterday that he would've just stayed home under those cozy sheets. But, no. He stated that he wanted to make a change for children in the future. For us, children. My view point of Civil Rights is that if i were in the place of Dr. Roberts I could've felt really down and maybe would've not gone back to Central High. I would look up high to these nine courageous people that actually tried and finally made a change in the world.
ReplyDeleteWhat I think about having heard Dr. Roberts is that he was so specific in detail. For example he told us about him going into a fast food restaurant and made a mistake by sitting in a seat. Before they couldn't do that because they weren't allowed. The Civil Rights were not taken seriously because even though they were there no one paid attention. In the book Melba talks about the same thing she was discriminated and not allowed to do certain things. In the book they did not let her have a normal high school life but president Faubus was saying that in the news that "he would prevent any obstruction of the law and to carry our orders of the Federal Court(Beals 89). That was one main part were the Civil Rights was actually being noticed. Before they would not even care but the President was making people understand that integration was not a bad idea.
ReplyDeleteAccording to Dr. Roberts, he always wished he could just disappear when he went to Central High, (Roberts). I think civil rights was a very dangerous challenge to accomplish, but it was all worth it because it made such a difference in history and in our lives. In Warriors Don't Cry, Melba and the Little Rock Nine were being so discriminated that they were almost killed about everyday.
ReplyDeleteI think that Dr. Roberts was the best speaker we have hade this hold year. What he lived when he was little was very hard because imagine you getting scream at every day for just being color I would get mad but what melba and Dr. Roberts lived was almost like the same story I just cant imagine it because how the white people can treat the color people like nothing. According to melba “there seems to be no space for me at central high. I don’t want integration to be like the merry-go-round. Please, god, make space for me”(“warriors don’t cry86”)
ReplyDeleteI think that Civil Rights is not what i thought of when i read Warriors Don't Cry and when Dr. Roberts talked about his life as a Little Rock Nine.He was strong for going through what he went throught each day.In Warriors Don't Cry they all went throught out days that they didn't want to get out of bed and go to school.All nine still went to school no matter what they had to go throught each day.The Little Rock Nine knew as soon as they walked through the doors of Central High they would go through hell and they would still go back to school each day. Each day their parents will tell tham that they didnt have to go back to school they can go back to their old school.I didn't really know these men,yet i had no choice but to trust them(Beal 81).They all had to trust people they didnt know but they had no choice because their life was on the line.
ReplyDeleteMy thoughts of the Civil Rights after hearing Dr.Roberts speak was that he had to really rough times by intergrating Central High School. He had to love his enemy in order to not hit back. He was spit,hit,teased,harrased, and being called races names.

ReplyDeleteCivil rights movement like I knew they would hit the black students in Central High but I didn't know they'll try to kill you at school. It’s kind of mest up that people you go to school with everyday of the week will try to kill you. According to Melba “There seems to be no space for me at Central high. I don’t want integration to be like a merry-go-round. Please god make space for me”(Warriors Don’t Cry 86).
After listening to Dr.Roberts my thoughts about civil rights changed slightly. one thing that changed was that i understood why they didnt fight back when the people would harass them and bother them. I understood this better because he began to say that only animals fight since they cant talk and since they acnt think about it since they have a tiny brain.

ReplyDeleteMy thoughts on Civil Rights after Dr. Roberts visit yesterday are that Civil Rights have come very far. When Dr. Roberts was my age he was getting beat up, spat at, and discriminated beasuse of nthe color of his skin. When Melba was in Cincinnati visiting other family and the white people treated her like an equal.
ReplyDeleteAfter Dr. Robert's visit my thoughts about Civil Rights were baiscally the same. I learned that every person that participated in The Little Rock Nine has a different side of the story during the Civil Rights. He was talking basically what we all ready had learned.

ReplyDeleteNow that I heard a speaker like Dr. Roberts talking about civil rights my thoughts are more understanding.I experience listening to a person who actually went through all those problems. I'm really impress how he's not afraid of people torturing him. For example when someone knocked him Incaution he said that that was his memorable day.Dr.Roberts is creative and he tries to get away from fights so that's more mature.According to melba(No matter what I'm gonna be a regular person.)

Fifty-two planeloads-c123's and c130's brought 1200 battle-equiped paratroopers to Little Rock Too see that integration is carried out at Central High School without further violence.(Beals 90). The president had to send soldiers because the police couldn't hold back the people.

ReplyDeleteThe civil war was worse than I ever had imagined it.It was worse bacause he told us about the time he got hit in the head with a lock and it opened his head.I didn't think it was a walk in the park,but I always thought they threatened to kill them ,but never actually tried to do it.I always thought they just beat the people up.Like in Warriors Don't Cry when the white man chase Melba and her mother I didn't think they would kill them only hurt them.
ReplyDeleteMy first thought after I heard how terrible they treated black people was ,why would he continue going to school after he was almost killed.Then they also beat up Melba and if it wasn`t for luck like Dr.Roberts she probably be killed.Then when she was walking a girl spit on her and guys kicked her and it was only luck Danny interffered(Beals 108).

ReplyDeleteWhen Dr. Roberts came yesterday it made me understand more about what really happened. It's a really good thing that he came because it's good to hear from someone who actually went through all of what we are studying. I learned that trying to earn civil rights was really hard back then because many people where racist. I learned that he almost got knocked out. He talked about how he was afraid of going to school and how he was so scared just to go sit down at a lunch counter. It relates to the book because when Melba went to her first day of highschool she got hit and spit and chased(beals 69-77). It's like when Dr. Roberts went to school and got called names and was hit and spit almost killed.
ReplyDeleteMy thoughts about Civil Rights is that some may disagree with them, but every one has to follow them. For example, Mr. Roberts didnt always agree with them ,but he lived through it and folloed them to tell his remarkable story about his trouble some past. In "warriors don't cry" it also explains the somewhat messed up democracy on how racism effects on everything like when the little rock nine were in court and the judge passed the law..The whites went crazy...Even though everything was tragic back then, Mr. Roberts was a well spoken, respectful man.

In the book"Warriors dont cry"he talked about how the first time when he arrived at Central high he thought that the people were outside ready to salute,welcome him but he was wrong beacause they actually wanted to kill him.

What I think about Dr. Roberts is that he became a succesful man, I think it's a good idea of someone coming to speak to us about

segregation happend.My thoughts about Civil Rights after having to hear his speech is that it was unfair for buses to to segregated,
like he said that he felt like hitting the white people when he had to go to the back of the bus and before i thought that the African Americans got use to go to the back of the
bus and didn't really care , but they did. According to the author Melba Pattillo Beals "What if Grandma is wrong, what if God can't fix things,What if the white people are always gonna be in charge"
[Beals 11]. Maybe Dr.Roberts could relate to that quote because maybe at some point of time he felt that white people are always going to be in charge if no one stands up for the African Americans.
I think that Dr. Roberts visit and what he said was very interesting because he expirienced someting so dangerous in his life.To me he is a hero because he's been through so many horrible things in life and he still managed to keep his head up and fight for what was right.According to Beals,"God loves you,child; no matter what,he sees you as his precious idea"(Beals 76)relates to yesterdays speaker because when ever they felt in trouble or in danger they always thought about someone to help them.
ReplyDeleteMy thoughts about civil rights after having to heard Dr.roberts was that i really got to understand trough what he went trough and the hurrible things they did to him but he still came to be like a hero to some people..He talked about how when one of the little rock nine got suspended we asked him how he felt and he said that he felt happy but then again sad because she got expelled.He also talked about how people would scream bad names to them and how they would try their best in ignoring whats going on around them "up the stairs i went squeezing my way past those who first blocked my path and then shouted hurtful word at me"(Beals 74). i choose this quote from the book because it relates whit what he spoked about.

ReplyDeleteMy thoughts after hearing Dr.Roberts is that he din't know what to do after dose white kids had beaten him up.He didn't know if he should fight back or just go.Were it says "They're in here! Oh,God, the niggers are in here!"{White girl,Pattillo 72}this is mean because the girls mom taught her to be mean and agresive to the colored poeple.Her mom taught her to hate the colored poeple, to treat them like they were nothing but slaves to them.The mother didn't show her child to respect any kind of person.Another quote would be"they got in.i smell something...."{white kid, Pattillo,72} What this kid said was just straight up bogus because Melba just wants to go to school and learn.
ReplyDeleteI thought he was a very intelligent man and he really got my attention get with his words like Barack Obama gets my attention.He was very tall and in warriors don't cry I that that he was not that tall and also with Dr.Robert present in our school was very interesting because I learn many things.
ReplyDeleteMy thaughts about civil rights after hearing him speak is that when he was saying that if you hear someone call you stupid for instance and u turn aroud your actually stupid. For Dr. Roberts if they called him nigger an he turned aroud hed listening to there comments and if he ignores them that means that hes not a nigger and hes like any other person.
ReplyDeleteI thought that the speech that Dr. Roberts gave us was great. I can imagine how hard it must of been for him with the "rules" of segregation. What most stood out for me was his story when he wanted to buy a burger;but had to run because he sat in a seat in the restaurant. Also, how he had to be careful because of the White Citinzen Council. Because they could attack him or other blacks for no reason. Also,how they were cowards because they attacked at night and hid their faces. How he almost blacked out because they hit him in the head with a combination lock. Like Melba when she got hit while playing volleyball. "For just one istant, I was actually concerned about whether or not I could hit the ball and score. It took me a moment to realize it was whizzing awfully close to my head. I ducked, but they hit me real hard, shouting and cheering as they found their target" (Beals 76). It makes me realise how hard it must of been for him and the other eight at Centrall High. And when they send death threats to him to not go to school.
ReplyDeleteMy thoughts about the Civil Rights is that he explained more and he gave us more details about the Civil Rights.How I can connect to Warriors Don`t Cry is when Melba ignored the White girl and she didn`t turn around she just kept on walking and she ignored the rude comments the White girl was making."As hard as I tried not to care ,I couldn`t start my morning without knowing what the governor,his National Guard and the school boardwere up to"(Beals 47)
ReplyDeleteOkay well my thoughts about Dr.Roberts visit yesterday was that he really made the book Warriors Don't Cry really sound interesting! it made me feel so much sorry for the people in the story Civil Rights had its own mind to treating peple really bad! Black people are being treated badly, which they dont deserve to be treated that bad! Just like when Dr.Roberts memtioned that when he was in a restraunt, he sat down and people starting looking at him in a wierd way, he finally got to his sence that it wasnt right for him to sit down and wait for his food! I thought about that for a second and i pictured myself in his shoes, i wouldnt have done the same thing, ran out, and started crying!
ReplyDeletemy thoughts about the civil rights is that since the begining everybody should of had their own liberty . everybody is a person and the only thing thats diferent is our dna . this connects to warriors because the whites were treating the black as if they were dogs . ReplyDeleteAfter Dr.Roberts'yesterday Warriors Don't Cry became more than a book. He makes the experince more real. When the question was asked about his reaction to Minnijean being expelled and he said they were proud I felt a sudden agrement with him. His attidute toward the whole subject amazed me. I can't believe that he could really love his enemy. I could never do this. "This above all made all the 'Go home, nigger' and 'I'm gonna get you before the day is ober' fade into the background" (Beals 88). This qoute is shows that Melba was comforted by the smiles just as Dr. Roberts was comforted by rating their insults.
ReplyDeleteAfter Mr. Roberts visit it made me think differently about "Warriors Dont Cry" because we asked a question about "death threats" and he replied said "It was an ordinary and he did not believe them no more" when he said that it made me think that he was not afaid to go to Central High."this all above made all the go home nigger and i I am going to get you before the day is over fade into the background" (bels 88). this quote is saying that Melba should go home because if she dont she will get killed.

ReplyDelete"get those niggers!Hang those niggers Stop those cars ,"i heard somebody shout. The people running beside us accelarated their pace hurling rocks and sticks at the car.(patillo 83). That showed that white people were using violence to scare off the blacks.
After hearing Dr. Roberts, I realized that each of the students of Little Rock Nine has their own story of their involvement during the Civil Rights Movement. Now I know that the African-American students were not the only ones risking their life each day just to go to school, the white soldiers and men were also risking their life to protect the children. In Warriors Don’t Cry, Melba said, "he was second white man I would pray for God to protect" (Beals 84). Melba realizes that he had risked his life to protect her and so all she can do is pray for him. I thought that Dr. Roberts really gave us a bit more information about during the Civil Rights Movement; he told us his personal experiences that helped us understand how unfair the black people were treated. He told us about the time he wanted to simply buy a burger and had to run out of the restuarant before he even got to receive his order because he sat down to wait for his food and people were looking at him like he had committed a terrible crime. This helped me understand that African Americans couldn't sit in restuarants, and if they did, they would probably pay some kind of consequence. In Warriors Don't Cry, Melba isn't allowed to ride the Merry-Go-Round because she was black. This is another example of unfairness, just like Dr. Roberts was treated unfairly by not being able to sit in the restuarant because of his color.
ReplyDeleteFirst off he is a very funny guy.Also he sounded so smart and stuff,in all he was a cool guy.But back to the information he said he was so afraid he could barely stand up straight.Other thing he said were like after all the threats he said that they were ordinary.But most of all he impressed me like he didnt stutter like most people do after being realy scared or he didnt feel revenge or any of the sort.Also the story of when he went to the Crystal Burger,and he sat down when he wasnt suppose to.Now what I think of the civil right movement is that.They should have done it sooner,because there were alot of stuff being said like "two,four,six,eight,we aint going to integrate" which were messed up remarks.
ReplyDeleteMy toughts about the civil rights are that they weren't equal and that they were very cruel because not everyone had the same rights. For example, the blacks didn't have the same rights as the whites did. They were treated very badly and they couldn't do the same things that whites did. Even when spaces were empty like on a merry-go-round, they still couldn't use anything because they were black. Life back then wasn't very good for blacks. It wasn't at all fair. But now thanks to the people that helped and made a change, now everyone has the same rights.
ReplyDeleteRoberts was a tall, thin guy. He was a junior just like Melba and he was Melbas friend since the first grade. Also he was one of the 9 students to intergrate Central High. The day when they went to Central High, he was hit with a combination lock and Melba was hit with a volleyball and was called many cruel names.
Now that I heard Dr.Roberts speak of what he went through. It made it clear that many people had different thought of what civil rights meant. Even little examples that he made like Minniejean Brown who dump the chili on a guy. All the little rock nine had it with people seeing them diffrently. One quote that pops out was "Well be too old for high school if we had to listen to all those people"(Beals 66). It shows that they didn’t care about what they said about them they were encourage to go to Central High.

ReplyDeleteMy thoughts about civil rights after having Mr.Roberts speak is that the civil rights were very strict because they din't want them in the school and that part of him wnated to give up but part of him din't because he rembered all those people that gave up their rights for better lives. According to Beals," i was certain it would take a miracle to integrate Little 5Rock's schools" is like if she really wnats to go to that school.
ReplyDeleteWell I think all people should be able to do whatever they want. It doesn’t matter if you’re white, Black, or Mexican. I think it wasn’t fair how people treated blacks they always used to be violently hit. According to Melba Pattillo Beals blacks always used to be treated by whites by saying,"'Get her, get the nigger out of there. Hang her black ass!'"(Beals 37). Well I feel bad for the blacks that had to pass through this every single day. Why couldn’t whites just accept them in their school? They just made a big deal out of nothing.
ReplyDeleteWell when I heard the first words of Dr. Roberts it srprised me because he wasent what I imagine he would be. He was funny.I saw him as a really serious man that wouldn't say any joke but he was the opposite of that.After hearing his part of the story I learned that the White Citizens Council was actually like the Ku Klux Klan. They were named that way because they were based on Little Rock.His words were so full of imegery I could see everything he said.When he started talking about the racial descrimination I kind of felt bad because he had pased through a lot of sufferings for not only his freedom but for all of the African-Americans."You'all just gonna sit still and let thisnigger come in here like this?"(Beals 97).The descrimination has shown so freely that they did'nt watch there words,they did'nt care at all.
ReplyDeleteAfter hearing Dr. Roberts he made me look at the Civil Rights in a different way. Even though he and the other members of the Little Rock Nine were mocked, laughed at, or even insulted, they didnt loose hope. Dr. Roberts said something i'll never forget, he said that every insult he recieved he ranked it from 1-10. That mede me think "wow after all he has gone through he still find a way to make things look allright." In ch8 Melba and the others were suppossed to be taken out because the mob was too big and people were arguing that to let the mob heve a child.(beals Ch8)

I think Terrence Robert was one of the best speakers because he talked about the past and how he went to Central High his very first time and how he thought he thought that the white people were going to solute him but instead they wanted to kill him
ReplyDeleteFrom my veiw point my thoughts about the civil rights after hearing Dr. Roberts talk about them changed alot because I only thought that were being discriminated against and being critized but I learned that, that wasen't the case with them. The case was that they were being treated worser than I thought. I just couldn't beleive that this really happen, what took place in Little Rock, Arkansas will stay there. Dr. Roberts told a really great story of how it was back then how they were being spit at,tortured,called names. This relates to "worriors don't cry" because we are talking about the same topic and because we are reading about one specific Little Rock Nine.

ReplyDeleteAfter hearing and seeing Dr. Roberts yesterday he was the complete opposite than I originally thought he was going to be. I imagined him much elderly and much more serious. But he in times made us laugh and tried to talk to us. As he talked about times back then and everything people did to fight for equality it made me realize how times today are way different than before. Sharing he’s experiences with us in such detail was the best part. Like when he said that he mistakenly sat in a restaurant and before he knew it whites were starring at him, since back then “colored” weren’t supposed to sit down in restaurants. Or how he explained that at some points he didn’t feel like waking up and going in Central High and much rather sleep in bed under he’s sheets. Like Melba as she said “there seems to be no space for me at central high. I don’t want integration to be like the merry-go-round. Please, god, make space for me”(“warriors don’t cry86”). I’m sure Dr. Roberts felt the same way. Overall I enjoyed Dr. Roberts visit.
ReplyDeletedr roberts visist helped me understand how the lilttle rock nine must of felt every day.he talked boutthe reasons he attented central high ang high he stuck to it.And that meda it preatyy clear for me that the reason he did this was becausae is something he thought it was right.terrence robert seemed really calm after all that happend throught his life and he doednt deem mad o hurt that thoose people who wanted to segreate messed up his childhood.he accepts it and is happy and that made me understand calm good people they are.a quote that came to my mind when terrence robert came was "youll make this your last cry. youre a warrior on the battlefield for our lord. gods warriors dont cru=y cause they trust that he's always by their side"(darby44).

ReplyDeleteDr Roberts just wanted not to go anymore to Central High School because they discriminate him didn't like him so he wishes that to get out of there .I think that to accomplished civil rights was kind of hard .I also think that all the whites were bogus to the blacks.
