As Beals said, Grandma India said that it was a good idea because it was going to make the segregationists really happy, (Beals 160). Grandma India told Melba to start that faster so she can end her life quicker. I don't think this is a good response because it shows that they don't really care about them if they were dead or alive. That shows a lot of disrespect and how much love someone has for you.

When Melba finally decides that she doesn’t want to suffer anymore she goes to her grandmother and tells her that she wants to kill herself. Grandma India responds "Good Idea" (Beal 160.) Melba was so shocked by the way that she responds by saying that it’s a good idea. It was a good response because grandmother India was using reverse psychology by saying that if you kill yourself the segrationaist have won and then she began to point out a bunch of headlines about how she killed herself. So when grandma India was pointing out all of these headlines and saying that its good that she will kill herself and about how the segregationist will be celebrating and since she pointed out all of the side affects of her death it made melba rethink it so that is why it was a good response.

In chapter 14, Melba wishes she was gone for some time and wish she was dead. When Melba told Grandma India. Yes, I think that Grandma India did respond good. I think this because If she did kill herself the white people would just make fun of what she did, and really care about her. They would just celebrate for their one out _to go. After Grandma India told her this Melba did realize that what she was wishing for was not warrior like and wasn't a really good idea.

When grandma India said those things Melba was sad and angry because she though that grandma India didn’t care about her. After grandma had said more things to Melba, she began to realize that grandma India had only said those things to make Melba change her mind about killing herself. In my opinion this was a good answer because Melba cannot be cuddled all the life especially now that she is going to Central High where they treat her like dirt. Grandma India gave Melba “tough love” to help me. After that Melba began to think and then she remembered that she would also fail not only her family and friends but God also.

Although I get why she might have done it, it wasn’t right because encouraging her to die now then later wasn’t going to fix anything. It was only going to make Melba want to die even more, having that one of the people that is most important to her is happy about her idea of die. It would have been better talking to her and explaining that she shouldn’t do it because it would only give the white people joy inside that they had been apart of the killing of one of the Little Rock Nine. Without them even having to plan the killing or do anything in their part because Melba took all the work away by killing herself. All in all, it wasn’t right how Melbas grandma responded to her thought of suicide.

Well from what i have read, i say that Melba wants to kill her self because she thinks that if she dies, the intergration would turn better. Although, if I were her I would be a little hurt in the beginning to hear my own grandmother tell me that it was a good idea to die. Grandma India didn't really care about what Melba said. All Grandma India said was that was a good idea. She just told Melba that how did she plan to go along with it because Grandma India knows that if Melba dies that whites are going to think that she comitted suicide or killed herself because she couldn't take the whites. The whites are going to think that they won and that if one black is dead, that the rest of them are going to do the same.
Melba notices that in her diary she's been writting the same thing over and over again. She's been writting that she wishes to die. That she wishes to become dead and then come back to life again. She then goes and tells her Grandma about what she's been thinking to do, but Melba didn't get the response that she wanted. Instead Grandma India responded by saying that okay, that if Melba wanted to die that, that was a good idea. That it's Melba's choice if she wants segregationists to say that Melba killed herself because she couldn't take on what the whites were doing to them. That the 9 black students couldn't take the pressure. Grandma India then told Melba about all the celebrations that whites were going to have, and all the big parties that were going to be planned. But that was enough for Melba, she had made up her mind and deciced that dying wasn't a good idea(Beals 160).
For me this wasn't a good idea because that was just wrong of her thinking about dying. I know that in life we're all going to have problems and that we're going to wish to die, but what Melba is doing is good and if she wants to continue to integrate Central and not be mistreated, then okay. She shouldn't have tought about dying because this won't not only affect her but many people and people that she loves. When Melba said that to her Grandma, it looked like if her Grandma didn't care, but she did and I bet she got hurt because Melba's grandmother loves her and she doesn't want her to die because just thinking of that, it kills her to know that her grandauther wants to die adn just give up to what god wants her to continue on doing.

One day Melba comes home from school and she starts to have a doubt that what if she doese'nt make it through the school year.She starts thinking that it would be better if she was dead.She tells her grandma and she responds in a way Melba would have never expected.She says "Good idea" (Beals 160).I think it was a good answer because she Grandma India is right.If she kills herself the other people are going to think that they are winning.Also she is going to give the media more to wright about.
The main important event was when Melba told her grandma that she wanted to kill herself. her gradma responded that if she killed herself she would give the segregationist what they wanted(Beals 160). ReplyDeleteWhen Melba finally decides that she doesn’t want to suffer anymore she goes to her grandmother and tells her that she wants to kill herself. Grandma India responds "Good Idea" (Beal 160.) Melba was so shocked by the way that she responds by saying that it’s a good idea. It was a good response because grandmother India was using reverse psychology by saying that if you kill yourself the segrationaist have won and then she began to point out a bunch of headlines about how she killed herself. So when grandma India was pointing out all of these headlines and saying that its good that she will kill herself and about how the segregationist will be celebrating and since she pointed out all of the side affects of her death it made melba rethink it so that is why it was a good response.

I think this was a good way to respond because she made her think that okay go ahead kill yourself it will make the white people happy knowing that they are getting into the your head. When Melba told Grandma India she just said "good idea"(Beals 160). Melba didn't understand, then she told her again and Grandma India just said "I heard you the sooner you start, the sooner you'll make the segregationist real happy"(Beals 160).

ReplyDeleteIn chapter 14, Melba wishes she was gone for some time and wish she was dead. When Melba told Grandma India. Grandma India told Melba,Oh good idea and that the white people would like to hear that if Melba did kill herself they would say 7 to go and they would just laugh at what she did and not feel bad for Melba(Beals 160). Yes, I think that Grandma India did respond good. I think this because If she did kill herself the white people would just make fun of what she did, and really care about her. They would just celebrate for their one out _to go. After Grandma India told her this Melba did realize that what she was wishing for was not warrior like and wasn't a really good idea.

In the book Grandma India tells her that's what segregationists want you to do they want you to give up and die (Beals 160). I think that it was good answer because that gave Melba the idea that it wasn't a good idea to die. If Grandma India would have said don't say does things then Melba would have kept that in her mind. She would have had second thoughts about wanting to die. Now in her mind she wants to live now because she does not want to give the segregationist the pleasure of making a Little Rock Nine member suicide herself.

ReplyDeleteGrandma India responds by telling her that it’s a good idea with no emotion. Then she said the sooner Melba kills herself the sooner she’ll make the segregationist happy. Grandma India then began to make up headlines “Little Rock heroine gives in to segregationist-kills herself.’”(Beals Pg.160). When grandma India said those things Melba was sad and angry because she though that grandma India didn’t care about her. After grandma had said more things to Melba, she began to realize that grandma India had only said those things to make Melba change her mind about killing herself. In my opinion this was a good answer because Melba cannot be cuddled all the life especially now that she is going to Central High where they treat her like dirt. Grandma India gave Melba “tough love” to help me. After that Melba began to think and then she remembered that she would also fail not only her family and friends but God also.
ReplyDeleteAs Melba tells her grandma that she wanted to die, her grandma told her to go ahead and that all the white people would enjoy reading about her death (Beals page 160). After that she starts explaining all the different possible headlines on the newspaper and broadcasts. I don’t think it was the right way to respond. Although I get why she might have done it, it wasn’t right because encouraging her to die now then later wasn’t going to fix anything. It was only going to make Melba want to die even more, having that one of the people that is most important to her is happy about her idea of die. It would have been better talking to her and explaining that she shouldn’t do it because it would only give the white people joy inside that they had been apart of the killing of one of the Little Rock Nine. Without them even having to plan the killing or do anything in their part because Melba took all the work away by killing herself. All in all, it wasn’t right how Melbas grandma responded to her thought of suicide.

By telling Melba that I think her grandma gave her a good answer because it did make her change her mind and kept fighting for what she believed was right.

Grandma India’s response to Melba wishing to be dead was strange. She had said that it was a good idea, but in a mad way. In my opinion Grandma India was trying to tell Melba that if she died segregationist would be happy, and it would be a victory for them (Beals 160). It was a good answer because they have done a lot of important things just to give up right now.

Which was quite shocking to me for a family member to say that but as I kept reading I notice she wasn’t serious she said it sarcastically, she was actually mad that Melba said that and she said “If Melba kills herself she’ll let the whites win because that’s exactly what they want”(Beals 160). I feel Grandma India was right in saying that because its true that if Melba does decide to kill herself whites will know that they can break the rest of the Little Rock Nine and keep going.

ReplyDeleteWhen Melba tells her grandmother that she wishes to die her grandmother responds very strangely. Instead of trying to comfort her she says its a good idea. Melba repeats what she said and so does her grandmother. She starts asking how she's planning on killing herself and comes up with many different headlines that might be in the newspapers. Then, she says how there would parties and dancing because of her death so Melba realizes that dying isn't such a good idea. (Beals 160-161). I think that this helped Melba realize what the right choice would be on her own. It seems kind of harsh to me that she responded this way, but it did get Melba to think about it more clearly. By telling her about the white people's reactions and all the rejoicing there would be, Melba saw that she wouldn't do any good by dying. Although, if I were her I would be a little hurt in the beginning to hear my own grandmother tell me that it was a good idea to die. It's a good thing that Melba understood what she was being told and that her grandmother explained her true feelings aferward.

I think that it was the right answer because I felt as if Melba is becoming the victim at sometimes. She always feel like she wants to die she needs to move on. I don't think this was a verry good responce because when you tell someone that you want to kill yourself you would think they would tried to get you out of killing yourself or advise you to do something about it like to go to therapy ar something to get all youre stress and feelings out.

I think this was a good answer that Grandma India gave Melba because it made Melba change her mind about killing herself. Reverse psychology was a very useful strategy that she used.

She just told Melba that how did she plan to go along with it because Grandma India knows that if Melba dies that whites are going to think that she comitted suicide or killed herself because she couldn't take the whites. The whites are going to think that they won and that if one black is dead, that the rest of them are going to do the same.
ReplyDeleteMelba notices that in her diary she's been writting the same thing over and over again. She's been writting that she wishes to die. That she wishes to become dead and then come back to life again. She then goes and tells her Grandma about what she's been thinking to do, but Melba didn't get the response that she wanted. Instead Grandma India responded by saying that okay, that if Melba wanted to die that, that was a good idea. That it's Melba's choice if she wants segregationists to say that Melba killed herself because she couldn't take on what the whites were doing to them. That the 9 black students couldn't take the pressure. Grandma India then told Melba about all the celebrations that whites were going to have, and all the big parties that were going to be planned. But that was enough for Melba, she had made up her mind and deciced that dying wasn't a good idea(Beals 160).
For me this wasn't a good idea because that was just wrong of her thinking about dying. I know that in life we're all going to have problems and that we're going to wish to die, but what Melba is doing is good and if she wants to continue to integrate Central and not be mistreated, then okay. She shouldn't have tought about dying because this won't not only affect her but many people and people that she loves. When Melba said that to her Grandma, it looked like if her Grandma didn't care, but she did and I bet she got hurt because Melba's grandmother loves her and she doesn't want her to die because just thinking of that, it kills her to know that her grandauther wants to die adn just give up to what god wants her to continue on doing.
How grandma response when Melba expresses the desire to die is that she really doesn't care she just said good idea. She just says that and nothing else.

I think that this was not a good answer because she din't even give some good advice to melba she just said good idea. Also why i think that this was not a good answer because it made melba more confused and melbe din't know what to do and that is why she went whit her grandma so she could get some advice or so the grandma would say something to her so she wouldn't think that way.
In chapter 14 Melba's expression of dying to her grandma India leads to her grandma being sarcastic about it and telling her that she should go ahead and do it that is a very good idea to let them know that she gave up when her grandma told her that she was a warrior and she herself had done so too. Grandma India was trying to help her realize things and get the desire of her wanting to die away she wanted her to rethink over and if thats what she really wants. ReplyDeleteOne day Melba comes home from school and she starts to have a doubt that what if she doese'nt make it through the school year.She starts thinking that it would be better if she was dead.She tells her grandma and she responds in a way Melba would have never expected.She says "Good idea" (Beals 160).I think it was a good answer because she Grandma India is right.If she kills herself the other people are going to think that they are winning.Also she is going to give the media more to wright about.

I think her response was a good one because she was hinting for her not to do it. Also she just said that so Melba could change her mind. Melba might change her mind because she is a warrior of god and her mission is not complete
