Final thoughts about Integration
Now that we have finished reading Warriors Don't Cry, I want you to think about some of Melba's thoughts at the end of chapter 18. She writes, "My Central High School experience also taught me that we are not to separate. The effort to separate ... is as costly to the separator as to those who would be separated" (Beals 222). What do you think she means?

I believe she means that in order to be separatation the separator must fight for that choice just like the separated must fight for not being separated.
ReplyDeleteIt means that she is knows because of her experience she is trying to say that they also miss on alot. For example they missed out on new friendships and that the ignorance of people not knwing that we are all equal and god didn't give us life to suffer but to learn from our mistakes.
ReplyDeleteI think she means that without Melba’s kind of people, the white people would miss them because they needed someone to mess with. When she said separation would be just as costly to the separator as to the separated, she means that separation really affects more the separator (the white people) to the separated (the African Americans).
ReplyDeleteWhat I think she means is that whoever is seperated suffers but the one who is trying to seperate them is also suffering. They create a whole mob and fight to seperate the whites from the blacks. The hard wotk of the seperator is a struggle for them. Also the one that is being seperated is also struggling and suffering because they want their rights they want to be equal. Both the the seperator and the one being seperated are struggling for their beliefs. So basically what I'm saying is that the seperation has an effect on both the seperator and the one being seperated.
ReplyDeleteI think Melba is trying to say that the Civil Rights Movements efforted every one. Also that even if people try to stay out of trouble they still have an trouble with the segregation.
ReplyDeleteI think it means that the person who seperated them might be happy but the people that they seperated might be sad or mad because they might have been good friends and that they might miss them.
ReplyDeleteWhat Melba means by "My Central High School experience also taught me that we are not seperate. The effort to seperate .. is as costly to the seperator as to those who would be seperated". What she means by this is that those who want SEPERATE to happen which is SEGREGATION means ii would take more work to do this than to INTEGRATE and fight for whats right. She means that fighting for what is right has harsh factors but takes less than seperation. INTEGRATION was much bigger than SEGREGATION.
ReplyDeleteFrom my view point I think that she is trying to explain that going to Central taught her that we are not separated. By this she means that we were never separated it was the effort of those segregationist to makes us separate.
ReplyDeleteI think what Melba explains at the end of the chapter is true. She says, "My Central High School experience also taught me that we are not to separate. The effort to separate ... is as costly to the separator as to those who would be separated" (Beals 222). Meaning that people can’t pull apart from each other because it will only make madders worse. If people don’t talk to each other, whether it’s because of skin color or their ethnicity things will never end up right. The person who decides to not talk to the other person because of there race will only end up causing the same problem to the person that’s not talking to the one that decides not to talk to them. If everyone acted this way at the end of the day people would only stick to there own people and race and would never end up learning great things about other ethnicities and would never get to know great people that are only hidden under the color of the skin.
ReplyDeleteI think she means that the effort you put when you separate white with colored is as more trouble to the person who separates them . But she also means that people from different places are not to stay apart but to stay toghether in this world that's how you'll learn to be equal.
ReplyDeleteIt means that the person who is being separated from others is hurt more than those separated from one. In other words one person separated from a group that the group separated from one per son because with that group you still got other friends
ReplyDeleteI think that she means that she learned they are not so diffrent only that they never bothered to know each other and that if they don`t want to get know each other they will never get along so that it hurts both of them until they do.
ReplyDeleteI think that the quote that Melba says at the end of chapter 18 explains how they are never going to be seperated even though they are. They were all in it together and thats how its going to be. They should all stay togher because together they fought and won.
ReplyDeleteI think she means that when people seperate it hurts the seperator and the seperated. The seperator becomes a mean person and they hurt the person that they are being mean to. It is costly because the seperator acts mean and spends their time making life worse for other people. For the seperated they have to stand what people do to them.
ReplyDeleteWell what i think she means about "My Central High School experience also taught me that that we are seperate. The effort to seperate ourselves....etc.." is that no one seperate unless you do it and that color, creed, religion, status dont matter.Or maybe that whites should associate with whites and blacks should associate with blacks.
ReplyDeleteWhat it means is that her experience taught her that whites and blacks just can't be seperated because whites don't try to be integrated. It is hard for them because blacks need to pay for their dipolma's. Whites because they don't want to be mixed with blacks...they want to be one union.
ReplyDeleteWhat it means is that her experience taught her whites and blacks cant seperate because whites dont wanna integrate. It was hard on the people who were trying to keep blacks and whites seperate because blacks did a lot to desegregate. It was hard on the people who wanted desegregation because whites were doing everything to keep that from happening.
ReplyDeletei think she means that everyone is the same and nobody is perfect
ReplyDeleteI think Melba means that it’s going to be hard to leave Central High.Even though she had all those bad experiences there because she learned a lot by going to that school. She learned how to stand up for herself and not to be scared of anyone or anything.
ReplyDeletein my opion i think that she means that you will never be separated of someone that has hurt you. what i mean is that melba was hurt by a lot of whites and she will never be separated by the whites , whites are everywhere. and they wont change.
ReplyDeleteI believe she means that if you seperate people you will never know what could have been. It could cost you a friendship or a realtionship. My first thoughts were if Mrlba had not been racialy seperated maybe should have married Link. I don't know why this jump into my head, but it could have been true.
ReplyDeleteI think that means that is more easy to get picked on by yourself because if people just see you alone it more easy to them to attack. If you think that being by yourself is braver is better going in groups.
ReplyDeleteI think that she means that our color should not judge us and also she might say that she made it out of Central without being and that she made what shewanted to accomplish which was to make the whole year at Central.
ReplyDeleteI think what melba means is that there are always united there always together that there not going to separate from each other .
ReplyDeleteI think that at the end of Warriors Don't Cry when she says that she means that separation affects the person who is doing it and the victim. The person who is separating is affected because he or she is being narrow-minded and doesn't want to try new things that may work out in the end. The person who is being separated is not being permitted to experience new environments and learn about a different race. They are not being accustomed to being with a different race, which may lead many of them to being racists. I believe she is absolutely right about the separator and the people being separated.
ReplyDeleteIt means that damages those who are seperated. Like how Melba didnt get the things she would of gotten if she would of gone to a black high school. How it "cost us our innocence and a precious year of our teenage lives"(Beals 216).
ReplyDeleteAnd how people should be intigrated and given the same rights. No matter what skin color or race. Or any of that stuff. Thays what I think.
What I think that she means about what she writes at the end of chapter 18 that when they want to accomplish something that they should not separate and that if they separate that the separation would have cost not making there dreams and those that had to be separated they would be separated and if they stick together they could reach anything that they want to accomplish.
ReplyDeleteI thik that she is saying thst by seperating by race all you are doing is costing the world more violence and trouble. and that just means that we will have more violence .and the quote means thatit will be alot of trouble to seperate because know everything is peacefull and it's going to take alot of work an alot more tyo those who are being seperated to bring the of the world back.
ReplyDeleteShe tries to explain that the separation didn’t only affect the segregationist and the Little Rock Nine as well. It affects the separator because he/she uses all their power to try and separate them. It also cost the ones who will be separated because they have to use all their strength to keep together. Like Melba said that her experience taught he not to separate from one another. I also think she believed that the separator would soon get tired and leave them alone.
ReplyDeleteI think that she means to say that if school were to remain separate that it would’ve been worse I also think that she is meaning to say that not just the African Americans suffered when they were trying to integrate but so did the whites because it made them take up their energy and time to try and keeping out of there I think that is what she is trying to get thru.
ReplyDeleteI think Melba is saying is that when you force people to separate everyone ends up suffering. The people being seperated are obviously affected because they have to start over and change their habits. The seperators are affected too though; in the Little Rock Nine the seperators were affected because some of the students who wanted them gone got suspended. The parents were also affected because they had to pay taxes for the soldiers that were protecting the kids. In other words she's saying no one wins.
ReplyDeleteI think she means that if one is seperated they are more likely to be in danger because they are alone and anyone can attack them because there is no one to run to or a witness. It is also more dangerous to the ones who will seperate because it's like if they go looking for the one who seperated seperately they will also be ambushed and they will have lesser in their group so there is a bigger chance of being beaten. They can't survive without one another.
ReplyDeleteBasedon what Ihave read what ITHINK SHE MEANS IS that the black race and the white race are meant to be friends. Its bad being seperated because you are going to be alone.
ReplyDeleteThis means that the kids don't have the responsibility to end this whole segregation problem and the ones who try end up badly affected as well as the people involved in the problem. They don't have a chance to end with this problem.
ReplyDeleteI think she means that the seperated and the seperators both get affected in one way or another. The Little Rock Nine had to sacrifise many things in their social and personal life and change their way of living from what they were accustomed to and the seperators got suspended. In the end nor the seperated or seperators end happy because the seperated missed out on a lot of special events and the seperators didnt get it their way.
ReplyDeleteI think Melba meant that just cause your a different kind of race don’t mean we aren’t equal from each other . And we should separate from are love ones or are kind. And is hard to be separated you are already.
